CHAPTER

NINETEEN

Dan Dickens, better known as Drax, lived in a nice modern home at the top of a long curvy road in the lush hills above the city. Jacarandas and flowering plum trees lined the road up to the property. The house was mostly windows on the front, a midcentury modern with flat roof and white cinder block entrance. Massive date palms lined the driveway up to the house. There were two lifted blue trucks in the driveway parked on either side of a black Mercedes sedan. A small green midsized Honda was parked off to the side and looked out of place next to the other expensive vehicles. A black wrought iron gate blocked entry into the driveway.

Logan stopped the car just short of the gate, opened his window and reached for the button on the intercom.

"What can I do for you?" a voice asked.

Logan lifted his badge for the security camera. "Detectives Cooper and Hawkins here to see Mr. Dickens. It's important," he added.

"One moment."

"What do you want to bet Mr. Dickens will be unable to see us," Logan said.

Seconds later, the voice on the other end returned. "I'm sorry but Mr. Dickens is not able to—"

"Tell him it is in regards to a murder investigation and that it would be in his best interest to speak to us," Logan countered.

"One moment." The woman returned seconds later. "He can only spare a few minutes."

The gate lock clanged and the ornate iron gates swung slowly open. Logan parked next to the Honda. There were cameras in every corner of the eaves as they walked along a strip of cement pavers to the double front doors. A large man with a neck as thick as his head met them on the front stoop. Nothing about his square jaw and brooding forehead said welcome. He had a leather shoulder holster strapped around his fuselage sized torso. A shiny Glock was nestled in the holster.

"Badges?" the man grunted.

They showed the badges, which he studied as if getting ready for an exam. "This way. Don't touch anything," he growled.

As they walked behind, Reggie pretended to touch everything they passed. Abstract art, the kind that really took some figuring out, lined the long, wide hallway. A Persian rug runner ran the length of the slate floor. They passed a sitting room that was filled with white leather furniture and had a waterfall cascading from the top of a fireplace mantel. It seemed Drax had done well for himself. He made plenty at the Palace but enough for this type of lifestyle? Logan doubted Julia would have paid an exorbitant price for the business.

What had Drax gotten into after the Palace? Logan made a mental note to find that out. The armed guard stopped at a door and knocked with his massive knuckles. An older woman answered. She was wearing light blue scrubs and latex gloves. The distinct smell of a hospital, rubbing alcohol, antiseptic, sanitizer and, if his nose wasn't deceiving him, the acrid smell of blood, seeped through the opening.
